Jati started out life in 1984 in a garage in the Melbourne suburbs. The “spare time” venture of a school teacher with a love of teak and vision and perseverance for creating outdoor furniture of timeless quality and workmanship, eventually earned Jati the reputation of the Melbourne and Sydney outdoor furniture specialists. Now with over four decades of hard experience and passion making and selling teak outdoor furniture, Jati offers a wide selection of quality designed, hand made pieces and settings, ranging from English heritage garden collections to the latest in ultra contemporary style.
Jati sells a carefully curated range of outdoor benches, tables, weatherproof lounges and seating; as well as outdoor accessories such as umbrellas and soft outdoor cushions. A selection of wicker, aluminium, sling and outdoor upholstery balances the core range of the same sustainably sourced, A-Grade plantation teak that Jati has always been known for.
Teak is a longstanding history amongst seafarers due to it’s durability and resistance to water and salt. Jati uses traditional carpentry joints rather then metal fasteners whenever possible, making our outdoor furniture especially suitable for beach houses and the first choice for boat and yacht furniture.
Our Teak
Our teak is sourced from the dry hills of East Java, Indonesia — a region celebrated for producing the world’s finest teak. Java’s well established, world recognised government-controlled plantations are carefully planned and sustainably managed. Through more than 40 years in business, fostering long-standing family connections to the region — we have access to this premium teak and manufacturing available. Great care is taken in the cultivation of these trees. Our relationship with the plantations enables us to select only the highest-quality teak for our all Jati Furniture.
Take a closer look at our furniture and you’ll see the characteristics that make our teak premium:
- The timber is knot-free and evenly grained.
- The colour is consistent, with no variation.
- There is no sapwood present — and we never apply oil to our furniture, a practice often used to hide imperfections.
- Notice the warm caramel tone? It indicates the teak’s rich natural oil content.
- Our timber remains exceptionally stable under changes in temperature and humidity and will not warp, even after many years outdoors.
- Its dense grain and natural oils makes it naturally rot-resistant and all our hardware is stainless steel or corrosion resistant brass allowing it to stay outdoors year-round.
- Jati teak only improves with age, developing a beautiful silver-grey patina over time.
Techniques
We take our workmanship seriously. All our teak is kiln-dried to between 8–12% moisture content. Contoured pieces are machine-cut from one single piece for sturdiness. Each piece is precision machine-cut, resulting in perfect mortise and tenon joints — this is an old technique is a reliable way to produce a lasting stable product. Our metal hardware is corrosion-resistant. Final sanding is done by hand, then drying in the gentle natural sun. For finishing a further hand sanding to give an ultra-smooth finish.
This is the care that goes into every item of Jati teak. It is guaranteed to last. Thousands of repeat Jati customers are testament to this. You only need to live with Jati teak furniture to understand it’s true value over the decades. So its not uncommon for us to find our pieces decades later sitting in gardens with a that beautiful grey patina.
Each new furniture piece comes with a five-year guarantee.
