How long does teak furniture last?

Teak wood is superior in terms of durability. If A grade teak wood is well looked after, it can last anywhere between 30 to 75 years. Thanks to the unique properties of this tropical hardwood, teak furniture is highly weather-resistant, requiring little maintenance—an ideal choice for the harsh Australian conditions.

What types of teak grades are there?

Teak wood comes in three quality grades including grade A, B and C. The choice you make will directly affect the outdoor performance and durability of your furniture, so it’s important to know your teak ABC.

Grade A teak is the highest quality wood gathered from the centre of fully matured (20 years or older) trees. Thick, dense and rich in oil, grade A teak takes little to no maintenance to maintain its beauty and condition for years down the line.

Grade B teak is a more affordable option, gathered from the outer section of the wood. Grade B wood is lighter in colour and less shiny due to the lack of natural oils found in the heartwood. Although it can’t outperform Grade A furniture, Grade B wood can bravely stand up to the elements with the right protective treatments.

Grade C teak, also known as sapwood, is obtained from the outer sections of the logs of immature trees. Soft and easily damaged due to the trace amounts of natural oils or lack thereof, Grade C teak is of inferior quality.

At Jati, we take great pride in using premium-grade teak from sustainable, government-controlled plantations on the island of Java, Indonesia.
